Lowndes County Animal Shelter Not Accepting Owner Turn Ins

Lowndes County, Georgia: The Lowndes County Animal Shelter has been at capacity for several months now and as a result will no longer accept owner turn in of pets through Thursday, September 30, 2021. Lowndes County encourages citizens looking to have a positive impact on the pet population in our community and improve the health of their pets to choose spay/neuter.

Benefits of Spaying (females):

  • No heat cycles, therefore males will not be attracted
  • Less desire to roam
  • Risk of mammary gland tumors, ovarian and/or uterine cancer is reduced or eliminated, especially if done before the first heat cycle
  • Reduces number of unwanted cats/kittens/dogs/puppies
  • Helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives

Benefits of Neutering (males):

  • Reduces or eliminates risk of spraying and marking
  • Less desire to roam, therefore less likely to be injured in fights or auto accidents
  • Risk of testicular cancer is eliminated, and decreases incidence of prostate disease
  • Reduces number of unwanted cats/kittens/dogs/puppies
  • Decreases aggressive behavior, including dog bites
  • Helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives

The lack of spay/neuter has been a major contribution of the Lowndes County Animal Shelter being full as well as pet owners simply not wanting or taking responsibility for their animals. Over 30 percent of the pets turned in have been by individuals. This has caused a negative impact on the animals as well as caused the Animal Shelter to be overcrowded and resources stretched thin.

The Lowndes County Animal Shelter is open for adoptions Tuesday through Friday from Noon to 4:00pm and Saturday from Noon to 3pm. Adoptions take approximately 30 minutes to process. Dogs/puppies are $125 and cats/kittens are $55 each. All animals adopted from the Lowndes County Animal Shelter are spayed and neutered, receive a vet exam, get their rabies vaccination and a microchip ID along with registration.  Cats and kittens are confirmed to be negative for feline leukemia while dogs older than 6 months are tested for heart warms.  The adoption benefits offered by the Lowndes County Animal Shelter is a tremendous value to the pet owner.

Lowndes County will reevaluate the pet owner turn in policy on October 1, 2021. For more information visit www.lowndescounty.com
