The Lowndes County Board of Elections was created through an act of legislation and functions under the direction of the Secretary of State of Georgia. The Lowndes County Grand Jury, under the direction of the Chief Judge of the Southern Judicial Circuit (Judge Tunnison), appoints the Board of Elections. The Board is comprised of three members, appointed for staggered terms of three years. Each year, in May, one Board member position opens and a Board member is appointed. The Board serves Lowndes County on a part-time, as-needed basis.
The diverse office staff consists of five full-time persons and a varying number of part-time staff (1 – 200) to meet fluctuating work demands and polling place staffing.
The office's responsibilities include conducting elections for federal, state and local offices; federal, state and local redistricting; assisting elected officials and candidates in completing state ethics forms and maintaining them for public inspection; maintaining U.S. Justice Department compliance and implementing federal and state legislation, Supreme Court Decisions and Attorney General Opinions. Other functions include voter registration, voter education and service to the community where we work and live.
