Lowndes County Public Works Page The Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining the county’s roads, bridges, fleet of equipment and vehicles, buildings, grounds and parks operated by the county. Providing service to external customers, the department maintains approximately 850 miles of paved and unpaved roads that are lived on and traveled daily by our citizens and visitors.
Road Maintenance Operations: Installs driveways on rural roads, patches potholes, and cleans ditches in addition to grading unpaved roads every ten days. The division also is also responsible for road shoulder maintenance and mowing, and road sign installation and maintenance.
Road Maintenance Construction: Performs road improvements projects to stabilize base on unpaved roads and improve drainage. Improvements and repairs requiring larger equipment to install pipes and culverts are also completed by Construction. The division also completes site-grading projects for the development and improvement of County parks and facilities.
Equipment Maintenance: Provides service to internal customers by maintaining and fueling 169 automobiles and light trucks, 19 multi-axle trucks, 53 fire trucks and 25 pieces of heavy equipment. Maintenance records of the fleet are prepared and maintained for operational cost and budgetary purposes.
Facilities Maintenance: Maintains 55 buildings providing repairs to the facilities, heating and air conditioning systems, housekeeping and mail delivery. The division is also responsible for landscaping and maintaining the grounds for our public buildings including seven parks and over 480 acres of county owned property.
Solid Waste Collections: Operate six (6) manned collection sites throughout the County where citizens can bring recyclable and non-recyclable household garbage from their residences. The division administers contracts for disposal of recyclables. Transports solid waste materials for disposal and recycling.
Mosquito Control: Maintains surveillance of roadside ditches in the densely populated areas in unincorporated Lowndes County. Applies chemical insecticide to standing water found in roadside ditches to exterminate mosquito larvae. Spray as directed for adult mosquitoes if West Nile virus or other mosquito borne diseases are documented.
