Volunteer with the Lowndes County Animal Shelter

On average, Lowndes County Animal Welfare receives 100 calls per day and 21 of those calls are calls for service that require an Animal Welfare Officer to respond. With four full time officers to respond, the work load is tremendous. This being the case, the Animal Shelter depends on volunteers willing to give of their time to help shelter operations run smoothly.

For safety and liability reasons, volunteers must be 18 years of age. In addition, volunteers must be in good standing with animal rescues, the local veterinary community and be free of any past court records related to animal care.

Volunteer Duties:

  • Spot & Cage Cleaning – help us maintain a healthy, clean environment for our shelter pets
  • Supply Organization – supplies must be readily available to meet the needs daily shelter operations
  • Donation Collection – local donations of cleaning supplies, towels, pet toys, pet beds, travel crates are needed
  • Rescue Coordination – a life-saving option for so many shelter pets
  • Pet Exercise – a twofold benefit, reduction in the stress levels of both shelter pets and volunteers. THE BEST THERAPY!

Arrive Ready to Work:

  • Closed Toe Shoes – flip flops and sandals will not protect your feet in a shelter environment
  • Long Pants – a requirement of shelter staff and volunteers
  • Free Time – Cell phones and electronic devices can be a distraction
  • Open Mind & Heart – Public Shelters can be stressful for animal lovers, understand the reality of a public shelter.
